Where are we and what's on our doorstep? Answer = the Gorgeous Countryside!
Set in its own generous plot with views over rural countryside it is
approached via a country drive immediately facing the black entrance door to
The Green Man PH on Hinton Road in Hurst. Indeed the Village Newsletter, which can be found here shows
at the top right of the home
page an image of the pub taken from the top of this selfsame drive!
In this picture to the right you get a feel of how close The Green Man is.
That's it at the top of the drive - close enough to stagger home yet far enough
away not to be a nuisance. Mmmmm nice, very nice in fact!
Hurst is an almost protected village haven surrounded by some of the
world’s largest and
most successful organisations. The Parish of Hurst is the second largest
Parish in England in geographical terms yet it still has one of the
lowest headcounts per acre! No street lights here – just a taste of the
simple life; a life many of us strive to achieve in this busy world; a life you
can start to appreciate on your first visit to St. Swithins Cottage!
Surrounded by the beautiful Berkshire countryside it is but just over 1 mile
from Twyford Railway Station which can have you in London Paddington in less
than 25 minutes! London Waterloo is equally accessible with M3, M4, M25 &
M40 all nearby.
Heathrow is but 22 miles away and even private planes and helicopters can land at the nearby White Waltham Airfield.
Maybe it's that long awaited / promised trip to Legoland Windsor only 11.9 miles or a mere 17
minutes away according to Google maps?Whatever the case St. Swithins Cottage with its acres of grounds, swings, horses, tanks, walks and local attractions is so perfect for a young family - hey mine grew up here and they haven't turned out too bad!
You may wish to relax and make the most of your free time. Again Hurst and
St. Swithins Cottage is an ideal place to be. Surrounded by many beautiful
Public Rights of Way, which epitomise the tranquillity of the village, you can
leisurely stroll to the open spaces and bird watchers’ dream
of Dinton
Pastures a mere two miles away or amble through nature along a
gorgeous country walk to the award winning, 150 acre Stanlake Park Wine Estate just over a
mile away.
Stanlake is a must do if you
stay here and please see our other sections with lovely walks there Pictures
from a walk to the vineyard in 2005 and the
Famous Falabella Horse walk to the vineyard.
They even organise special tailored events for groups to include a glass of
their own bubbly on arrival followed by a tour of the vineyard and possibly a
look in the winery dependent on whether or not they are processing grapes at
harvest time as the winery can get very slippery and messy with bits of grape
everywhere.
Tutored wine tasting is another favourite event utilising at least six of the
estate wines. Here along with a glass of wine there is freshly baked
bread,
platters of artisan cheese (the chilie cheese is to die for), locally
made chutney plus their own specially made chocolates (made for them by Rumseys
Chocolatier of Great Missenden). Typically this is for groups of around 20
people and if it is a hen party they present the bride with a gift wrapped
bottle of their pink (Blush) wine at the end.
This activity is a really great idea for the more sophisticated hen party and
they have hosted many successful hen parties just like this.
If seeing the Queen, or fancy ladies in fancy hats on "Ladies
Day" or just general horse racing at Royal Ascot race course is your
tipple then St. Swithins Cottage is the ideal location to base your
Champagne day out from.
Of course you can visit the picturesque and idyllic setting of
Henley-on-Thames, a mere seven miles away, for the Henley Royal Regatta, the
Henley Festival or the fairly new 80's Rewind Festival all of which are
spectacular events.
Go to our section on Royal
Ascot and the Henley Festivals for more information.
Running through the heart of nearby Sonning-on-Thames the River Thames is an
idyllic setting for a leisurely stroll or weekend boating and offers a good
range of sporting activities.
There are
many fine golf clubs around in the likes of Henley, Sonning and Knowl Hill but
you will find it hard to beat Bearwood Lakes which is
less than 4 miles away and was ranked 69th by Golf Monthly out of 5,000 in
the UK & Eire! Reservations can be made 10 days in advance and are
available Monday through to Thursday; just click this link to go to their
Day
Membership.
If either your budget or timings don't allow for the fabulous Bearwood Lakes
well just over a mile away there is the truly fabulous Billingbear Park Golf
Course which describes itself as "The best Pay and Play Course in Berkshire."
Please follow this link to see if it fits your needs Billingbear Park Golf
Course.
Now for the really good bit.......
Nirvana Spa is nothing short of
amazing, it is under 4 miles away and wait for it.........yes the really good
news is guests of St. Swithins Cottage get a 10% discount by
booking through our contacts with the spa.
Maximum party size is 6 persons and no children are allowed but boy is this
place the closest thing to the oppulence enjoyed by those ancient Roman
Senators or what?
The owner of St. Swithins Cottage is a regular under the palm trees in the
eloquently named Roman Room top right. He is not found flexing his immense
biceps, which obviously makes him legendary to ladies in Berkshire, neither is
he
found swimming in a frenzied fashion like David Wilkie, although he does
have a nice pair of red Speedos, no he is found underneath those giant palms
consumed in one of his books. Currently that is a passion for Vince Flynn and
his hero Mitch Rapp.
These same books and many others are of course available to all who stay at St.
Swithins Cottage as can be viewed here in the bookshelf
picture down in the bottom left.
The top left picture in this group of four shows a very relaxed lady
enjoying a Floatation Treatment in Nirvana's unique Dead Sea Celestial Pool.
Whilst the bottom left picture shows quite a few people having their senses
stimulate in the award-winning, 53-station hydrotherapy spa. Finally the bottom
right picture shows another relaxation area, of which there are many more, in
the very quiet and peaceful Relaxation Pool.
When it comes to health and fitness there can, quite litterally, be only one
choice Nirvana Spa!
