Where are we and what's on our doorstep? Answer = the Gorgeous Countryside!


St. Swithins Cottage - Back garden viewing past the Monkey Puzzle tree and onwards to St. Swithins Paddock. Set in its own generous plot with views over rural countryside it is approached via a country drive immediately facing the black entrance door to The Green Man PH on Hinton Road in Hurst. Indeed the Village Newsletter, which can be found here shows at the top right of the homeSt. Swithins Cottage - To the left we have St. Swithins Paddock and at the end of the drive, yes folks, that there is The Green Man! page an image of the pub taken from the top of this selfsame drive! 

In this picture to the right you get a feel of how close The Green Man is. That's it at the top of the drive - close enough to stagger home yet far enough away not to be a nuisance. Mmmmm nice, very nice in fact!

Hurst is an almost protected village haven surrounded by some of the world’s largest and St. Swithins Cottage - This time St. Swithins Paddock is off to the right and we are looking down the paddock in the direction you would take if you were going on the walk to Stanlake Vineyard. most successful organisations. The Parish of Hurst is the second largest Parish in England in geographical terms yet it still has one of theSt. Swithins Cottage - Now with St. Swithins Paddock behind us and the actual cottage diagonally of to the left we are looking to the bottom of the garden where the grennhouse is. lowest headcounts per acre! No street lights here – just a taste of the simple life; a life many of us strive to achieve in this busy world; a life you can start to appreciate on your first visit to St. Swithins Cottage!

Surrounded by the beautiful Berkshire countryside it is but just over 1 mile from Twyford Railway Station which can have you in London Paddington in less than 25 minutes! London Waterloo is equally accessible with M3, M4, M25 & M40 all nearby. 


Heathrow is but 22 miles away and even private planes and helicopters can land at the nearby White Waltham Airfield.

Legoland Windsor - So close and so much fun. Go on mum and dad treat the kids! Maybe it's that long awaited / promised trip to Legoland Windsor only 11.9 miles or a mere 17 minutes away according to Google maps?

Whatever the case St. Swithins Cottage with its acres of grounds, swings, horses, tanks, walks and local attractions is so perfect for a young family - hey mine grew up here and they haven't turned out too bad!

Stanlake Vineyard - The garden behind the shop where you can taste wines, have a picnic, just relax or do all three! You may wish to relax and make the most of your free time. Again Hurst and St. Swithins Cottage is an ideal place to be. Surrounded by many beautiful Public Rights of Way, which epitomise the tranquillity of the village, you can leisurely stroll to the open spaces and bird watchers’ dream of Dinton Pastures a mere two miles away or amble through nature along a gorgeous country walk to the award winning, 150 acre Stanlake Park Wine Estate just over a mile away.

Stanlake Vineyard - The shop.Stanlake is a must do if you stay here and please see our other sections with lovely walks there Pictures from a walk to the vineyard in 2005 and the Famous Falabella Horse walk to the vineyard.

They even organise special tailored events for groups to include a glass of their own bubbly on arrival followed by a tour of the vineyard and possibly a look in the winery dependent on whether or not they are processing grapes at harvest time as the winery can get very slippery and messy with bits of grape everywhere.

Tutored wine tasting is another favourite event utilising at least six of the estate wines. Here along with a glass of wine there is freshly baked Stanlake Vineyard - One of the actual vineyards of the estate. bread, platters of artisan cheese (the chilie cheese is to die for), locally made chutney plus their own specially made chocolates (made for them by Rumseys Chocolatier of Great Missenden). Typically this is for groups of around 20 people and if it is a hen party they present the bride with a gift wrapped bottle of their pink (Blush) wine at the end.

This activity is a really great idea for the more sophisticated hen party and they have hosted many successful hen parties just like this.

If seeing the Queen, or fancy ladies in fancy hats on "Ladies Day" or just general horse racing at Royal Ascot race course is your tipple then St. Swithins Cottage is the ideal location to base your Champagne day out from.

Of course you can visit the picturesque and idyllic setting of Henley-on-Thames, a mere seven miles away, for the Henley Royal Regatta, the Henley Festival or the fairly new 80's Rewind Festival all of which are spectacular events.

Running through the heart of nearby Sonning-on-Thames the River Thames is an idyllic setting for a leisurely stroll or weekend boating and offers a good range of sporting activities.

Bearwood Lakes Golf Club - The sumptuous club house. There are many fine golf clubs around in the likes of Henley, Sonning and Knowl Hill but you will find it hard to beat Bearwood Lakes which is Bearwood Lakes Golf Club - View down the 18th back to that gorgeous club house. less than 4 miles away and was ranked 69th by Golf Monthly out of 5,000 in the UK & Eire! Reservations can be made 10 days in advance and are available Monday through to Thursday; just click this link to go to their Day Membership.

If either your budget or timings don't allow for the fabulous Bearwood Lakes well just over a mile away there is the truly fabulous Billingbear Park Golf Course which describes itself as "The best Pay and Play Course in Berkshire." Now for the really good bit.......

Nirvana Spa - Absolute heaven on earth! This is the most sumptuous pool in the world! Nirvana Spa is nothing short of amazing, it is under 4 miles away and wait for it.........yes the really good news is guests of St. Swithins Cottage get a 10% discount by booking through our contacts with the spa.

Maximum party size is 6 persons and no children are allowed but boy is this place the closest thing to the oppulence enjoyed by those ancient Roman Senators or what?

The owner of St. Swithins Cottage is a regular under the palm trees in the eloquently named Roman Room top right. He is not found flexing his immense biceps, which obviously makes him legendary to ladies in Berkshire, neither is he Nirvana Spa - This is known as the relaxation pool and you have to be careful not to fall asleep and snore! found swimming in a frenzied fashion like David Wilkie, although he does have a nice pair of red Speedos, no he is found underneath those giant palms consumed in one of his books. Currently that is a passion for Vince Flynn and his hero Mitch Rapp.

Nirvana Spa - And here is the incredible spa pool. Fantastic to relieve aches & pains and generally to relieve one of stress. Highly recommended. The top left picture in this group of four shows a very relaxed lady enjoying a Floatation Treatment in Nirvana's unique Dead Sea Celestial Pool. Whilst the bottom left picture shows quite a few people having their senses stimulate in the award-winning, 53-station hydrotherapy spa. Finally the bottom right picture shows another relaxation area, of which there are many more, in the very quiet and peaceful Relaxation Pool.

When it comes to health and fitness there can, quite litterally, be only one choice Nirvana Spa!
